- summary report collates the results of the various tests. The Product of the Year 2015 award goes to Avast!
The Whole-Product Dynamic "Real-World" Protection test - a joint project of AV -Comparatives and the University of Insbruck. In this test all features of the antivirus product contribute protection, not only single components (e.g. URL blocking, signatures/ heuristic file scanning, etc.)
Here are the results from March till June 2012:
Best protection rate had these AV products: BitDefender I.S. 99,6%, G DATA 99,5%, Kaspersky 99,4%, Qihoo 99,4%, BullGuard 99,2%, F-Secure 99,1%, Avast Free 98,4%, ESET 98,1%, AVIRA I.S. 97,9%, Sophos 97,8%, Trend Micro 97,6%, AVG I.S. 97,5%, etc.
It is important to notice that most of the tested products were not freeware. For example, tested version of AVG, BitDefender and Avira were "Internet Security" shareware, but Avast Free Antivirus was freeware as the title says. Since Avast Free Antivirus was among 7 top rated products we can conclude that freeware is still a very good option if You are an average computer user.
Results from March - June 2011 showed that Avast! was among 9 top rated products, and Avast! Free Antivirus would score the same (97,7%) as the commercial Avast Internet Security version. On the other side, AVG commercial version scored lower, with protection rate of 95,2%.

Advanced: McAfee, Microsoft , Panda, Sophos, AVG Anti-Virus,
Lowest protection: Norman, TrendMicro Kingsoft
Best proactive detection of new malware: Trustport (63%), G DATA, Kaspersky, Microsoft, AVIRA, ESET NOD32, F-Secure, BitDefender, eScan (50%).
Older antivirus comparison, Comparison from November 2009
Best products: G DATA AntiVirus, Kaspersky AV, ESET NOD32, F-Secure Anti-Virus, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast! Proffesional, BitDefender AV, and eScan Anti-Virus
Advanced: AVIRA Antivir Premium, AVG Anti-Virus, Symantec Norton Antivirus
Standard: McAfee, TrustPort, Sophos, Norman, Kingsoft
AVIRA Antivir Premium had the best proactive detection of new malware, 74%, but high false alarm rate is the reason why is it not among the best antivirus products. All of the standard antivirus software products had many false alarms too.
G DATA had 66% success in proactive detection of new malware, Kaspersky 64%, NOD32 60%, F-Secure & Microsoft 56%; Avast, BitDeffender, and eScan had 53%.
Comparison from August 2009:
Independent testing body AV-Comparatives have released the results of their latest round of on demand anti-malware scanning tests, produced twice a year and featuring a selection of leading products. virusbtn.com/news/2009/09_21.xml
The top achievers were G DATA, Symantec's Norton, Alwil's avast!, F-Secure, BitDefender, MicroWorld's eScan and ESET's NOD32 . Also doing well at the 'Advanced' level were products from Avira, McAfee, Trustport, Kaspersky and AVG, with Avira, McAfee and Trustport marked down thanks to false alarms despite high detection rates. McAfee's product was tested with their Artemis in-the-cloud technology active.
Lower down the table came Microsoft's solution, rated 'Standard', while offerings from Kingsoft, Norman and Sophos ranked only 'Tested' - with Sophos' score again counterbalanced by a relatively high false positive rate.

Comparison from May 2009:
Best products were from Microsoft (60% proactive detection), ESET (56%) and Kaspersky (50%).
Second best were AVIRA (69%), G DATA (60%), BitDefender (50%), eScan (50%), Sophos (37%), Symantec (35%) and McAfee (25%)
Standard: AVG (45%), TrustPort (42%), Avast (42%) and F-Secure (14%).
False positives can cause more troubles than a real infection. That is the reason why AVIR is not the best, a some others are not even second best in this comparison.

The best: Symantec (98,7% total detection rate), ESET (97,6%), Kaspersky (97,1%), and McAfee (99,1%)
